A Rhyme To Help You Remember

The bottom numbers must be the same!

"Change the bottom using multiply or divide,
But the same to the top must be applied,

Before its time to say good bye"

  1. Hi Veronica! I love that you created a rhyme to help students remember how to add, subtract or multiply fractions. I think that when you can find catchy and fun ways for students to reiterate certain math rules in their heads, that is what makes the concepts stick. I remember when I was in elementary school, we learned a rap song for the order of all of the US Presidents and I still remember the order of Presidents to this day since it was something that was catchy and I would come home and practice every day in front of my family at the dinner table. I also enjoyed the worksheet that challenged students to find fractional answers with like denominators. I really enjoyed your post and know your students will love it too!

    1. Thanks, Kristin but I did not create it. The website I got it from is underneath the poem. The website probably did not stand out enough to notice. Thank you so much for commenting. You should do that President rap song in class. I'd love to hear it!

  2. Veronica,
I love the rhyme you shared! I know growing up those were the things that I remembered most from lessons I learned. Rhymes are definitely helpful memorization tools! I love that its a rhyme related to fractions as well. Fractions were not my strong suit or favorite topic in math class. Including fun things like this in lessons can definitely be memorable for students and can help them remember important rules. I also like the worksheet you shared and that it has a challenge at the bottom that students can work through.

  3. Hey Veronica - I love this rhyme! I was in music before making the jump to education so I try to incorporate music as much as possible in my blog. It’s more exciting for everyone when the students get interact with the material and each other, and when it’s something that you, as the teacher, are excited about too. It makes learning so much more memorable and enjoyable. I will definitely be referencing this rhyme for my future classroom. I think the worksheet you posted is also a great task for students to master before introducing adding with different denominators. Awesome job!

    1. Thanks, Meah! I love that you were in music. You can probably create your own original music and incorporate a lot of it in your classroom lessons for the students to use to grasp and retain concepts and information.
