Shapes and Vertices Standard 1G.

Shapes and Vertices are the sides and corners of a shape. Standard 1G. The first grade students that I work with had learned about how to count the sides of shapes. Now they had to learn the names of the corners in the shapes which plural are called vertices and a singular corner is a vertex. This lesson was taught on the rug in the classroom on the smartboard. The students had the opportunity to participate in the lesson by answering questions asked by the teacher and they also asked questions themselves. Then the students were instructed by the teacher to discuss how many vertices they saw and to discuss it with their partner. Afterwards, they went to their tables to work. The teacher handed out workbooks that included this subject. Some students struggled (3). These three were the students that usually required extra support. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- My Small Group Instruction: I took them to a kidney shaped table where they could gather around me. I gave them small group instruction and used I used triangle magnets. I traced the inside of the triangle magnet and while tracing it, I colored just the corners of the triangle using a res sharpie. I then had the students trace then inside of the magnet and shade it in with their pencil. After moved my magnet which revealed the shape and the red dots. I asked the students to look at my red dots on my paper and tell me what they were. Two said vertices and the third chimed in after them. I asked them to show me their shaded corners of their tracings. We counted them and then they grasped the concept of vertices.

  1. Thanks for sharing this worksheet and lesson Veronica. My son started learning this in kindergarten (Catholic school). I like the practical lesson of using the magnets and having the students tracing them so they can be hands on with tracing the shape and understanding what a vertex is and the plural vertices.
